Viscaria Village opens in Kiruna!
Viscaria Village is now open. Petter Stordalen and Viscaria CEO Jörgen Olsson inaugurated the village together with the first residents, who have already moved in.
The village sits directly adjacent to the mine site outside Kiruna, where one of the largest industrial investments in the region's history is under way. The restart of the Viscaria mine will supply Europe with copper for the electrification — and for years to come, thousands of contractors and construction workers will be doing that work far from home.
That is the group Viscaria Village is built for. The village holds 132 private rooms for residents working rotating seven-day shifts. Every room has its own bathroom and refrigerator, giving residents privacy and a place that feels like their own between shifts.
Around the buildings, the courtyard is designed for recovery and for the hours that aren't spent working: a football court, disc golf, an outdoor gym and a sauna, alongside communal spaces for eating together and winding down.
Our starting point is simple. Workforce accommodation cannot be treated as pure logistics. People working hard, far from home, in a demanding climate deserve hotel standard — and when they rest properly, health and safety on site improve with them.
The construction is as considered as the service. Built by MG Link from prefabricated timber modules, the village can be dismantled and reused in future projects once the build-out phase in Kiruna is complete. Because the accommodation is temporary and located at the mine site, it also lets Viscaria carry out the project without adding pressure to Kiruna's housing market.
Viscaria Village was developed in collaboration with Viscaria Kiruna AB and MG Link, with architecture by A & D Arkitektkontor.
